Reading Wrap Up June 2020

Hey Book Lovers!

It’s the end of June, and you know what that means! Time to look back at all the books we read for this month. I was only planning to read 9 books, and I ended up reading 15. There were a couple I planned to read that I didn’t get to, but overall, I’d say it was a fun and fulfilling month of reading. Let me know in the comments how you did this month!

Here are the books I read in June, and my star ratings for each. I’ll post a couple of my actual reviews here and there, but not all.

Felix Ever AfterFelix Ever After by Kacen Callender
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There’s so much I love about this book. Felix is trans and kind of identifies as male, or at least more male than he (they?) does female, which is the sex he was born with. His dad has been somewhat supportive, allowing him to get top surgery and take hormones, but still treats Felix like a “daughter,” calling him by his dead-name or not using the proper pronouns and such. But worse, his mom left after he “came out” and hasn’t spoken to him since, leaving Felix questioning his self worth and whether or not he is worthy of being loved.

This book delves into Felix’s relationships with others and himself, and I really enjoyed being along for that journey. He deals with some bullying, decides he’s going to catfish his enemy thinking a certain person did something early on in the story but then changing how he felt about that person the more he talked to and got to know him, and there was a temporary love triangle I was having a hard time deciding how I wanted things to go there for a while with!! But definitely glad things ended the way they did and loved the grand gesture toward the end.

Basically, this was a very satisfying read, and I hope it gets read far and wide. It was a beautiful story with beautiful characters.

Skyward (Skyward, #1)Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Amazing book. Underdog, fighting oppression, never letting anyone tell you that you can’t follow your dreams. The detailed world building was phenomenal. Fantastic writing.

Long Shot (Hoops #1)Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I could not put this down. I read the whole thing in one day. Major trigger warning for domestic violence and rape. This book was difficult to read in many instances, but my goodness, what a story. What I absolutely love above all else is that even though Iris endured so much, she never had to be rescued by a man. So much girl power. And Augustus, woo, what a Hero. Total swoon.

The Boyfriend Project (The Boyfriend Project, #1)The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Boyfriend Project is a fun, upbeat, modern read about Samiah, who finds out she and two other women have been “catfished” by a guy they met through an online dating app. The three women, though, hit it off, and become good friends who make this pact that they are each going to focus on themselves and their goals and swear off men for at least 6 months. This is of course when Daniel shows up as the new guy at Samiah’s work, all tall, dark, smart and handsome. They have major chemistry, but both have their reasons for keeping each other at arm’s length.

I really enjoyed this book, if not for the romance (which was good), for the friendships between these three women who connected over the bizarrest of circumstances. It was so much fun to read the scenes with these three together. Then there was Daniel. I really liked his back story and his sort of secret life. It was something new that I haven’t read before. Very cool.

Overall, it was a fun, light-hearted, and non-angsty read, great for summer-time by the beach.
